Monson denies Cohasset for Division 4 title

MILFORD — The ball at his feet 35 yards from the Cohasset goal and just minutes remaining into extra time, Connor Hicks did not have much time to think.

The Monson senior captain sent a rocket off his right foot that screamed over the outstretched hands of Cohasset goalie Ian Dunkelberger and into the top left corner of the net, lifting the Mustangs to their second straight Division 4 boys’ soccer title with a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Milford High.

“We’re going to enjoy this one,” said Monson coach Byron Brown after his team completed an 18-4-1 season.

“They were the best team we saw all year. We had to give everything to pull out a victory.”

Hicks set up Kyle Monaghan with 9:56 left in the first half to give Monson a 1-0 lead. But the lead evaporated three minutes later, when Cohasset’s Mitchell Buckley buried a penalty kick top-shelf. The Skippers then surged ahead, 2-1, with 8:10 left in the game. Mathias Loft cleaned up a rebound off of a 25-yard blast from Cameron Pattison.

Then, in the final minute of regulation, Hicks netted the equalizer. Monaghan found Hicks in the box, and the midfielder was able to deflect the ball toward goal. Seeing the ball slowly bounce in front of Dunkelberger, and the Cohasset back line closing in to clear it, Hicks wheeled around and tapped it home.

Cohasset finished 19-4-1.
