FOXBOROUGH — Mashpee surged to its second straight state title on Saturday afternoon, pulling away for a 34-13 win over Wahconah in the Division 4 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.
Sophomore Devaun Ford registered three touchdowns and senior quarterback Nick Carpenter passed for a score and rushed for another for the Falcons.
But who expected a 12-1 run from the reigning Division 6 champion, which graduated nine players off its explosive attack and was headlined by dynamic back DeShaun Dias?
“I can’t say enough about these kids,” said Mashpee coach Matt Triveri. “I don’t think that anyone understands that we’ve won three state titles now [2011, 2015, 2016] with less than 40 kids in different divisions. [Wahconah] has 80-90 kids on the field. It’s an unbelievable feat that these kids have done.”
Carpenter helped get the Falcons rolling. From his safety position, he snared an interception and ripped off a 17-yard return. His 47-yard rush then set up Ford’s first touchdown, a 15-yard run.
A fourth-and-5 post pass to Ford for a 7-yard score in the second quarter, along with a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter, helped swing the momentum for the Falcons.
Wahconah senior quarterback Will Genaway (57 yards on 10 carries) kept his team within striking distance with 47- and 9-yard rushing TDs.
Mashpee benefited on a couple of plays that could have changed the game. With Wahconah on top, 13-12, in the third quarter, an apparent interception by the Warriors was ruled an incomplete pass (a television replay showed that ball did not touch the ground). And in the fourth quarter, a pass to the end zone fell incomplete when a Mashpee defender got tangled up with receiver Connor Washburn.
“You can’t change calls,” said Wahconah coach Gary Campbell Jr. “Calls go your way sometimes and they don’t go your way other times.’’
Ford (17 carries, 120 yards) scored on a 36-yard scamper with 6:22 left and hauled in the 2-point conversion from Carpenter for a 28-13 cushion.
