Athlete of the Year
Erick Duffy, North Andover, senior
The Harvard-bound senior broke his own state record in the pole vault at All-States with a leap of 16 feet, 7 inches. In addition to a first-place vault at New Englands, Duffy was the Division 2 and All-State champ in the 110 hurdles. A three-time All-Scholastic, he also won the New Balance Nationals title, clearing 17-1.
Theo Burba, Newton North, sophomore
Fresh off running the nation’s second-fastest 600 in the winter, the sophomore was tops in the 800 at the State Coaches Invitational, EMass Division 1 championships, and All-States, and placed fourth at New Englands at 1:54.25.
Davonte Burnett, Needham, junior
Burnett is an absolute blur. The junior was the New England and All-State champion in the 100-meter dash at 10.48 and 10.63 seconds, respectively, and won the 200 at All-States (21.36). He also owns eight school track records.
Jacob Carlson, Billerica, senior
The 6-foot, 2-inch senior was the EMass Division 1 and All-State champion in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 55.05 and 55.54 seconds, respectively. He will attend West Point next fall, where he will play football.
Smith Charles, Milton, sophomore
The Globe Athlete of the Year for the indoor season, Charles won the long jump at the Division 3, All-State, and New England meets. He also took first place in the 100 and 200 at the EMass Division 3 championships.
Hayden Dillow, Xaverian, junior
Dillow took first place in the discus at All-States with a personal-best toss of 149 feet, 11 inches. A junior, he was also second in the discus (136-02) and fifth in the shot put (47-9½) at the Catholic Conference championships.
Ricky Francois, Brighton, senior
Francois was the City League Athlete of the Year and was named the South Shore Principals MVP with his victory in the 200 (22.56 seconds). The senior also finished second at All-States with a personal best of 21.8 seconds.
Nathaniel Klein, Newton North, senior
The Middlebury-bound Klein was the champion in the shot put at the EMass Division 1 championships with a toss of 54 feet, 3¼ inches. The Bay State All-Star also earned second-place honors in the event at All-States (53-5).
Fernando Lamin, Burlington, senior
For the second year in a row, Lamin was the EMass Division 3 champion in both the high jump and triple jump. The senior also placed fifth at Nationals at 6 feet, 8¼ inches to earn All-American status. He’ll attend UMass Lowell.
Andrew Mah, Newton North, junior
Mah won the 2-mile at the New England (9:10.36) and EMass Division 1 championships (9:21.77). He set a meet record with a first in the 2 mile at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational (9:15.26) and he was second at All-States (9:16.80).
Ryan Oosting, Arlington, sophomore
Oosting didn’t start running competitively until 2015, but you wouldn’t be able to tell: He dominated the mile and 2 mile, capturing the EMass Division 2 and All-State titles. Oosting also won the 2 mile at New Englands (4:11.93).
Joel Pastrana, East Boston, senior
Pastrana was fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump at the EMass Division 2 championships. The senior played an integral role in East Boston’s three-year City League title run and will run at UMass Dartmouth.
Calvin Perkins, Belmont, junior
The 6-foot-3 junior won the 400 at the Division 3 championships for the second straight year and placed first in the 800 at the Middlesex League championships in 1:58.96. Perkins also took second in the 400 at All-States (48.65).
Michael Pichay, BC High, senior
Pichay was the champion in the triple jump at All-States (45 feet, 1 inch) and was third at the EMass Division 3 championships (45 feet, ½ inch). The high honors student will major in pre-law and continue his career at Holy Cross.
Mark Porter, Reading, senior
The Penn State-bound senior placed first in the javelin at All-States at 194 feet, 7 inches, a Reading school record. Porter also was third at the EMass Division 2 (166-11) and New England championships (176-4).
Daniel Renwick, Old Rochester, senior
Renwick dominated the high jump, taking first at the EMass Division 4 championships (6-4), All-States (6-9½), and the New Englands (6-9). He was also All-State champion in the pentathlon with 3,592 points, a meet record.
4 x 100: Waltham
The team of Corey Masterson, Kyle Torres, Matt Luong, and Keith Mukire broke the Waltham 4x100 school record on four separate occasions and were Dual County League, EMass Division 2, and All-State champions. They also placed third at New Englands.
4 x 400: Mansfield
The Hornets’ quadrant of Nicholas Horn, Kyle Amerantes, Mike Shannon, and Kevin Crawford was second at the All-State meet and broke the Mansfield school record in the 4x400 with their third-place finish of 3:18.76 at the New England championships.
4 x 800: Marshfield
Mike Maglio, Joseph Donovan, Derek Holmes, and James Condon followed a stellar indoor season with wins at the EMass Division 2 (8:06.00) and All-States (7:50.97) meets. The group’s sixth-place distance medley relay at New Balance Nationals earned All-American status (10:22).
Coaches of the Year
Division 1: David Casey, Lowell
Despite having to overcome several early-season injuries, Casey’s Red Raiders went 4-1 and won the Merrimack Valley title. Then, after placing 15th at last year’s EMass Division 1 championships, Lowell claimed its first Division 1 title.
Division 2: Michael Leal, Central Catholic
The Central Catholic alum and 23-year coach led his school to a 5-0 record in the Merrimack Valley. The Raiders took first place at the EMass Division 2 and MVC championships, the D2 State Relays, and the MSTCA North Decathlon.
Division 3: Matthew Carr, Burlington
Under Carr, Burlington went 5-0 and won the Middlesex Freedom Division, Division 3 Relays, and EMass Division 3 championships for the second straight spring. The Stanford alum and 12-year head coach has gone 57-3 since 2012.
Division 4: John Monz, Weston
A MSTCA Hall of Famer and winner of the 2017 MIAA Distinguished Service Award, the 39-year coach led Weston to a 5-0 dual meet record, a Dual Country League (Small) title, and a third-place finish at the Division 4 meet.
