SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Senior running back Steffan Gravely ran 17 times for 149 yards and scored three touchdowns on runs of 3, 8, and 9 yards to ignite an offensive stampede as top-seeded Lynn Tech dominated visiting New Mission, 35-0, in a Division 8 North semifinal matchup on Saturday night.
“We’re here, let’s show the state why we’re here and why we’re the No. 1 team in Division 8,” said Gravely, whose unbeatean team (9-0) will square off against No. 2 seed Cathedral (8-1) in the sectional final. “That’s all we do, we just dominate.”
Leading, 21-0, at halftime, Lynn Tech’s defense controlled the line of scrimmage and forced New Mission to settle for short yardage runs. New Mission attempted to remain alive on the heels of running back Andrew Finklin, but the game clock was not in its favor.
On Lynn Tech’s first possession of the second half, Elvin Gonzalez, whose first-quarter interception triggered a 21-point outburst, jump-started the offense again when he scored on a 9-yard run midway through the third quarter, making it 28-0.
Chance Buono added a 17-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, helping Lynn Tech slam the door shut on New Mission (5-4).
“We work really hard on offense, but defensively, tonight, my guys played really well,” said Lynn Tech coach James Runner, who praised in particular the defense of Gonzalez (four pass breakups) and junior linebacker Emerson Ramirez (two sacks).
