NEWTON — The top-seeded Newton North girls’ volleyball team advanced to the Division 1 Central/East final with a decisive 25-15-, 25-10, 25-19 victory over Cambridge Ringe & Latin on Thursday night.
“You have to do one thing to start each play, which is serve well,” said Newton North coach Richard Barton after his squad improved to 17-1. “We served really well.”
Junior outside hitter Miska Legatova’s power finishes were devastating, from spikes at the net to waffling topspin serves that she threw 15 feet in the air, and hit just as hard.
“It’s almost like I’m setting myself up at the net, said Legatova, “but just way further back.”
Cambridge Ringe & Latin senior captain Lorra Marseille finished forcefully throughout the match as well, but it wasn’t enough to hold off a total team effort from the Tigers.
“Today, everyone was cooking,” said Barton.
He mentioned junior Ashley Wang, a 6-foot-3 setter and hitter who took over in the third set and helped push the score from 12-12 to 19-13. That late run made the difference, as Newton North won the last set 25-19 to advance.
Legatova signed a letter of intent to play at Fresno Pacific University to start the day, and she ended it with a win to send Newton North to Saturday’s sectional final against King Philip at Canton High.
“I’m excited for the future,” Legatova said. “We’ll see what happens next.”Tom Petrini can be reached at email@example.com.
