DIVISION 6 SOUTH |MIDDLEBOROUGH 30, OLD ROCHESTER 21
MATTAPOISETT — Middleborough quarterback Evan Gwozdz made plays when his team needed them, accounting for all four of his team’s touchdowns in the No. 5 Sachems’ 30-21 road win over No. 2 Old Rochester in the Division 6 South final Friday night.
“He was the X-factor tonight,” Middleborough coach Pat Kingman said of Gwozdz. “Our defense got it done, too, but he got us out of some jams, and we’ve come to expect that from him.”
Harry Smith struck first for Old Rochester with a 3-yard touchdown run five minutes into the first quarter but from there, the Sachems dominated.
Gwozdz (6-for-9 passing, 130 yards) connected with Colin O’Brien on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 6:59 left in the first half; he struck again with 1:37 left in the first half with a 75-yard touchdown on a QB draw on third-and-long to put his team up, 14-7.
In the second half, Gwozdz (12 rushes, 102 yards) punched in two more rushing touchdowns, both of which came on fourth-and-5 scrambles when all of his receivers were covered. The first score came with 5:17 left in the third quarter; the other came with 5:54 left in the game.
