“James has done this all year,” St. Mary’s coach Matt Durgin added. “The big thing you don’t see when [quarterback] Calvin [Johnson] is scoring is James is blocking hard. They know if they block they are going to get the ball.”

As a team St. Mary’s rushed for 373 yards, with 293 of them coming in the first half.

“I thought all of the kids ran the ball well. They ran hard and the guys up front executed,” Durgin said. “We have talent but we need to work together on every play to be successful.”

Brighton (6-4) scored a late touchdown to avoid being shut out. The score was the only points that St. Mary’s has allowed during the playoffs. The Spartans have outscored their opponents, 132-6.

“Brighton has a lot of speed and a lot of athletes so keeping them out of the end zone until the last two minutes was a very good job by our defense,” said Durgin. “We don’t have superstars on defense so collectively we have to play well together.”
