BOYS’ BASKETBALL | NEWTON NORTH 72, CATHOLIC MEMORIAL 64
NEWTON — Behind a dominant 22-point, 11-rebound effort from sophomore Aaron Cooley, the Newton North boys’ basketball team knocked off Catholic Memorial, 72-64, on Thursday night to capture the Garden City Holiday Classic at Newton South.
The Tigers trailed by 10 points early in the fourth quarter following a 9-0 run by Catholic Memorial (3-2).
However, North was able to rapidly switch the momentum onto their side. A 15-1 run turned was punctuated by a righthanded slam by Princeton commit Ethan Wright with four minutes left in the game.
“In the second half, we got breakaway dunks, layups and three-point plays,” Newton North coach Paul Connolly said. “The court opened up for us to make some shots.”
Junior Ezra Pemstein had the go-ahead bucket for the Tigers, a 3-pointer with 3:40 left that gave his team a 60-58 lead en route to finishing with 20 points. Wright added 15 for Newton North.
For the Knights, senior Kani Glover recorded 22 points and junior Jarron Flynn added 12.
