Record-setting day for Natick girls

The Natick High School girls’ track and field team set two meet records at the MSTCA James Kalperis Indoor Division 2 Relays on Saturday morning at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

Sisters Grace and Kate Connolly, Emma Ford and Paige Edwards finished the 4x800 meter relay in 9 minutes, 27:08 seconds, breaking Winchester High School’s 36-year-old meet record.

“To see two sisters run that well and set the meet record is really incredible,” said Natick coach Matt Strother. “Any time Grace competes we have the chance to see something special. I think people saw that today.”

Strother praised assistant coaches Ashley Davidson and Mike Zambarano for preparing the team, especially after the Redhawks started the season 0-2 in dual meets.

Natick collected its second record moments later when Abigail Gerdes, Rachelle Parker, Kylie Langan and Eme Su blazed their way to a 24:90 time in the 4x50 yard relay.

“It’s always nerve wracking; your best race, your worst race,” said Gerdes, who felt in awe of the competition. “We never really get the chance to run with a group of runners like this, so it feels pretty amazing.”

Gerdes, a junior, called the records testaments to the team’s dedication to detail and commitment to a positive attitude. Despite both records, Natick finished fourth in the team competition with 36 points. Woburn won the Division 2 girls’ championship, accumulating 49 points through 10 events.

Central Catholic earned the Division 2 boys’ championship with 44.5 points, besting an Arlington team that broke the boys’ distance medley state event record. Arlington posted a 10:28:00 time in the medley after Ryan Oosting anchored the team with a 4:15 mile.
