MIAA DIVISION 2 INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mansfield boys, Wellesley girls repeat as champions in Division 2

The Mansfield boys’ indoor track and field team did not record any individual first-place finishes at Saturday’s MIAA Division 2 championship at the Reggie Lewis Center.

So how did the Hornets repeat as state champion?

Mike Shannon and Kevin Crawford produced runner-up finishes in the 600 (1:23.02) and 1,000 meters (2:33.56), just the recipe Mansfield needed to stay close before taking over in the relays.

A near three-second victory in the 4x800 relay (8:10.57) gave Mansfield the cushion to stay out in front. And a first-place finish in the 4x400 (3:26.24) to end the afternoon locked up the title for the Hornets (70 points), who outdistanced Central Catholic (51), and Woburn (50½) for the championship. The Hornets added a third-place finish in the 4x200.

“We take great pride in the relays,” said Mansfield coach Julie Collins.

“They had a lot of pressure on them, and expected to do very well on the state level. The goal was always to advance three relay teams to the state meet if we can.”

Nick Horn placed third in the 300 (35.51) while Mike Maglio finished right behind his teammate, Crawford, for third place in the 1,000 with a time of 2:34.12.

Woburn’s Elisha George got the Tanners off to start a fast start on the infield. The senior took home first place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.81, and classmate Brendan Tumwesigye (7.91) followed closely behind to place second.

George was a crucial part of the 4x200 relay team that finished first with a time of 1:31.39.

“When I see [Brendan] do good, it makes me want to do good,” said George.

“The main thing was to stay focused and stay relaxed. I am here for a reason, and just finish the race and be smooth.”

With his clocking of 34.62 in the 300 meters, Somerville’s Phillips Magre broke the meet record of 34.72 set last year by Brighton’s Ricky Francois. Magre also placed first in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches.

Runner-up Central Catholic got first- and second-place finishes in the shot put by Ryan Burns (50-9¾) and Kalvin Guillermo (50-3).

The Wellesley girls leaned heavily on their relay teams and strong individual performances for a repeat, racking up 79 points to defeat Woburn (57⅓ ), Beverly (37), and Belmont (37).

Margaret Donahue legged out gold in the mile (5:02.28) and Abby Comella defeated Fitchburg’s Hannah Neilon by four one-thousandths of a second in the 300 for the win.

The Raiders won the 4x800 relay (9:42.71), and set a meet record in winning the 4x400 (4:00.11) — besting Mansfield’s mark of 4:00.66 set in 2014.

Belmont senior Anoush Krafian stood high atop the podium several times — placing first in the 55-meter hurdles (8.49), long jump (17-6), and high jump (5-4).

Natick, minus junior distance whiz Grace Connolly, placed fourth. Abigail Gerdes and Rachelle Parker placed first and second in the 55 dash, and were focal points of the team’s victory in the 4x200 relay.
