The defending Division 1 champion Woburn girls’ hockey team keeps chugging along in its quest to return to TD Garden.
Senior forward Marissa Gregory scored three consecutive goals as the third-ranked Tanners secured a 6-1 first-round victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon at O’Brien Rink.
The Tanners (21-0-2) will play the Braintree-Duxbury winner in the quarterfinals.
“It was a way better effort than the other night [in a 4-0 win over St. Peter-Marian],” said Woburn coach Bob MacCurtain. “ I thought we played more as a group tonight.”
Senior Georgie Santullo connected just 1:21 in, slotting one past eighth grader Summer Tallent. Captain McKayla Norris responded for the Vikings (13-6-1), firing a wrister past Amanda Essigmann.
From there, Gregory took over. The senior scored two goals in the last 2:47 of the first period, including one with 8.3 seconds remaining. She completed the hat trick halfway through the second period, poking home a puck in the crease on the power play for a 4-1 lead. Juniors Emma Carleton and Olivia Holmes added goals in the third period.
“It’s really important because we’ve had a hard time scoring goals now for about a month, so to do it against a tournament team this time of year is huge,” said MacCurtain. “We’re happy with it, but we know the next one will be tough, too.”
