LOWELL – Top-seeded Central Catholic pulled junior goalie Matt Pasquale with 38 seconds remaining in a last-ditch effort to tie fourth-seeded Hingham, a team Central shut out Dec. 20, in Monday’s Super 8 contest at Tsongas Center.

Hingham senior goaltender Robbie Kornack made all six saves he faced in those waning moments and solidified a 25-save shutout and a 1-0 victory in the first major upset of the tournament.

Hingham (14-4-6) plays BC High Saturday at the Chelmsford Forum. Central Catholic (22-2) plays Pope Francis on Wednesday in the losers’ bracket at Chelmsford Forum.

“It’s unbelievable,” Kornack said. “People doubted us in the beginning of the year. Coming in we were ranked at 18, then we picked it up during the season.

“With the loss early this year [to Central Catholic], it kind of put us back, put us as an underdog. All the hard work paid off.”

Hingham had Central Catholic in its heels early in the opening period, resulting in the lone goal of the night at 3:19.

Senior forward Jake Quilty flanked the goal mouth before darting toward the crease and backhanding the puck past Pasquale (14 saves). The goal was just the 15th the Raiders had allowed this season and it was their first goal against of the tournament.

“I felt like we had a good forecheck,” Hingham coach Tony Messina said. “I think we did a good job in the neutral zone to stop them there.

“That was the goal, and we scored enough goals – just one,” Messina said.

Central Catholic’s third-period performance mirrored its play from the opening two periods — the Raiders struggled to get clean looks on net and clean zone entries.

“We earned it,” Kornack said. “We’ve got a good chance to win it all and we’re rolling.”

BC High 1, St. John’s Prep 0 — Joe Dragon scored in the first period as second-seeded BC High (17-4-1) trumped third-seeded St. John’s Prep (14-4-4) to advance to the Super 8 semifinals.

    Division 3 South

Hopkinton 7, Dartmouth 2 — Sean Walsh scored 53 seconds into the game and the Hillers (19-2-1) never looked back, as seven players scored in the quarterfinal victory.
