HANSON — When asked if she had ever scored 45 points in a game before, Kendall Currence paused and tilted her head.
“I don’t think so,” said the Falmouth Academy senior with a laugh.
“Maybe in middle school.”
The Northeastern-bound 5-foot-7 guard put together a monster 45-point effort — including 26 in the second half of her final high school game.
But her magnificent performance was not enough against two-time defending state champion Cathedral in an 85-58 Division 4 South semifinal loss at Whitman-Hanson Regional on Thursday night.
The Panthers (17-5) soared to a 48-28 halftime lead and never trailed in locking up a spot in Saturday’s final against Coyle & Cassidy in Taunton.
Cathedral’s balance and depth were too much for Falmouth Academy (19-6), but the night belonged to Currence, who wrapped up a storied career with perhaps her best game.
“I like to watch good basketball,” Cathedral coach Clinton Lassiter said. “I was on the other side of the tape, so I didn’t want it to go too good, but she’s an excellent player. She’s going to do well at Northeastern.”
Currence did her damage all over, finishing inside, converting at the free-throw line and drilling three 3-pointers. One particular move trumped them all, when she crossed over right to left, hesitated and finished over two defenders.
But this was no ordinary opponent she was up against. The Panthers out-rebounded the Mariners 47-28 and thrived off second and even third-chance points.
Sophomore Mackenzie Daleba led the way with 18 points and eight boards, and Taliyah Countrymon, Kaiya Duverna and Jordyn Hunter-Coleman all snagged seven or more boards.
Cathedral has now scored at least 80 points in all three of its playoff games, and none of the three have been close. The Panthers are peaking at the right time and inching closer to a state title, and rebounding is a major reason why.
“We have the size,” Lassiter said. “When we’re disciplined enough to box out, we can rebound. Today we were disciplined in the second half.”Trevor Hass can be reached at email@example.com.
