    MIAA GIRLS’ SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

2018 MIAA girls’ softball tournament brackets

    KATHERINE FOMI NYKH
Milford High girls’softball coach Steve DiVitto (left), pictured with ace Kelly Reicheft, is not concerned with the No. 3 seeding for his club in the Division 1 South bracket.

Will Milford make it a repeat in Division 1? Can any team knock off Norton in D2? Will Austin Prep break through in Division 3?

Milford’s run to the 2017 Division 1 state title was fueled in large part to the play of its junior class. As seniors, that championship experience helped drive the Scarlet Hawks to an 18-0 start before a pair of losses ended their hopes of a No. 1 seed.

Instead Marshfield (15-1) captured the top seed in then D1 South bracket when the MIAA tournament pairings were released. Taunton (20-2) is then No. 2 seed, followed by Milford (18-2), King Philip (18-3), and Walpole (15-3).

“It’s going to happen, I mean, you start off the season with 18 straight, you’re bound to have a clunker here or there,” DiVitto said following Milford’s extra inning loss to North Attleborough.

“I’m glad it’s happening right now instead of [in the tournament]. We’ll work on what we need to work on and come back ready to go when we are assigned a team.”

The back-to-back defeats, 12-2 to King Philip and 7-4 to North Attleborough in nine innings, were uncharacteristic for Milford. But that will not alter the team’s approach.

“We’re going to keep playing Scarlet Hawk softball,” DiVitto said. “We’ve just got to keep playing, keep working, keep getting better and the seeding is what it is. I’m not really worried about that, I’m just focused on how our girls are approaching practice tomorrow and moving forward into the playoffs.”

Concord-Carlisle (19-1) is the top seed in the D1 North bracket for the second straight year. But the Patriots are aiming for a much longer run than year ago, when they were ousted in the first round. Acton-Boxborough (18-2) is second, followed by Arlington (17-3), Methuen (17-3), and Peabody (17-3).

In Division 2 South, No. 1 seed Norton (19-1) enters the tournament as the reigning sectional champion and a favorite for the state title.

With this year’s divisional realignment this year, a collision course with Abington (now D3) is no longer possible. But a new foe may be emerging in Plymouth South. Formerly in D1, the Panthers are the two seed at 18-2.

“It’s almost to our advantage,” said Plymouth South coach Stephanie Finn.

“We’ll face some teams we never play and we’ll just be playing to win. Every opponent is going to be tough no matter who they are.

“We’d love to play Norton, but we don’t want to look past any teams now. Before we get to them we have to play game one.”

Much like Norton, with Kelly Nelson, the state’s Player of the Year, South has a dominant thrower in Amelia Freitas. The freshman hurler was 17-2, compiling a 0.67 ERA with 193 strikeouts in 126 innings. At the plate, Freitas was even more dominant, boasting a .567 batting average with 38 RBIs.

“Amelia is very determined and very focused,” Finn said. “She comes up with big hits and big strikeouts. She definitely brings more than what’s expected of a freshman.”

In the D2 North, undefeated North Reading (20-0) is the top seeded. Reigning North champion Dracut (15-5) is No. 7. North Reading’s last loss came in the first round of last season’s sectional tourney, a 7-5 defeat to Swampscott.
