Hanover holds off late surge by Scituate’s Jack Poirier

HANOVER — Years from now, Scituate boys’ basketball coach Matt Poirier will look back on Thursday as the night in which his son, Jack, recorded the 1,000th point of his career.

Pleased as the elder Poirier is to have been courtside for his son’s accomplishment, the main goal of his Sailors was to grab a piece of the Patriot League Fisher Division title. Instead, the league belongs to 14th-ranked Hanover, which posted a 71-61 home victory.

“We came here to win a game and we didn’t,” Matt Poirier said.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to play them again later in the year,” said Jack Poirier, who led all scorers with 22 points. “It’s been a dream of mine for a while [to score 1,000], I’m psyched about that, but I really wish we could have won.”

The Indians (17-5, 13-2) built a lead as large as 10 points in the third quarter before Poirier erupted.

Entering the game needing 22 points to join the 1,000-point club, the junior guard had only 6 points in the first half for Scituate (14-3, 11-3). But he heated up for the Sailors in the second half, scoring 16 points as part of a 24-15 run, hitting 7 of 9 field goals in the third.

Poirier reached his scoring milestone on a mid-range jumper with 5.6 seconds left in the quarter, pulling Scituate within 52-51.

Hanover never allowed the Sailors to seize the lead, coming out gangbusters in the fourth to put the game away.

The Indians scored the first 14 points of the final frame before Aidan Sullivan (19 points) finally snapped the streak with a basket with 3:12 left in the game, the first points of the quarter for the Sailors.

“A younger group might have folded, but these kids have been battle-tested,” said Hanover coach Nick Hannigan, who got 20 points from Patrick Damon and 14 points and nine rebounds from James Clarkson. “They’ve played in a state championship game [in 2017], they’ve played in a sectional final.”
