What a night for Wellesley.

The Wellesley boys and girls each won MIAA Division 2 Track & Field Championships at Reggie Lewis Track Center on Friday evening, with the girls winning their third straight title.

The girls went 1-2 in the 600-meter run, as junior Abby Comella and senior Avery Mohan ran times of 1 minute 35.75 seconds and 1:37.64, respectively.

It was a duel between Wellesley and Natick. Natick sisters Grace Connolly (senior) and Katherine Connolly (sophomore) combined for three victories. Grace won the 1,000 in 2:59.60 and the mile in 4:58.84, and Katherine ran to a first-place finish in the 2-mile in 11:09.90.

But Wellesley prevailed (94 points) over Natick (79), as senior Anna Jordahl-Henry won two events, giving the girls the lead going into the relays.

“I’ve been working really hard this season, and I really wanted to win this meet. It’s the last divisionals because I’m a senior,” Jordahl-Henry said.

Jordahl-Henry won the 300-meter dash in 39.96. The victory leapfrogged the Raiders past Natick into first place.

Jordahl-Henry posted a mark of 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump, winning by an inch and a half.

Natick then battled back, going 2-3 in the shot put as senior Kassidy Gallagher threw 35 feet and junior Gabbie Pagnini went 34-6.

But Wellesley dominated the relays. The 4x200-meter relay quartet finished in 1:46.58 to edge North Andover (1:46.70) and the 4x800-meter group finished second (9:40.82), giving the Raiders a 10-point lead.

Comella, senior Charlotte Fremiere, junior Zoe Gieger, and Jordahl-Henry won the 4x400 by finishing in a meet-record 4:00.16.

It was just as sweet on the boys’ side for the Raiders. Almost three weeks after the State Coaches Invitational in which the Wellesley boys dominated the distance events, the Raiders’ distance squad came through again.

The field events and shorter races, though, gave the Raiders a needed boost as Wellesley (61 points) held off North Andover (57).

Junior long jumper Derek Chalmers hit a mark of 22-5, just shy of his PR. Chalmers also raced in the 55-meter dash and the 4x200-meter relay, which the Raiders won.

“My coach told me I had to run three events today,” Chalmers said. “I knew I had to take a deep breath and take everything one event at a time.

“I took the 55 as a warm-up to get my anxiety out and get ready for the day.”

Chalmers laid the groundwork for the Raiders. Then, the Wellesley distance events and relays took over, just as they have done all year.

Jason Norris placed fourth in the mile at 4:24.73 — but nearly came in first, as the first four finishers were separated by less than a half-second. Jackson O’Toole placed second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:33.30. Senior Colby Zarle was second in the 2-mile run in 9:33.51.

The Raiders secured the meet victory in the relays, as the 4x200-meter relay with Chalmers, sophomore Ryan Reed, senior Colby Stakun-Pickering, and senior David Olson won by more than 2 seconds, finishing in a meet-record 1:29.88. The 4x800 with Norris, O’Toole, Zarle, and senior Bennett MacDougall set another meet record (8:03.40). The top three teams — Wellesley, Lincoln-Sudbury, and Arlington — beat the previous meet record of 8:09.16.

“Amazing chemistry and amazing talent,” Chalmers said. “We did well today.”
