Trailing Northampton by one point heading into the final event of the MIAA Division 4 indoor track and field championship, the Weston boys’ 4 x 400 team put forth a critical second-place finish to secure the title on Sunday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Weston juniors Ramin Kiani, Samuel Hubbard, Peter Diebold, and sophomore Connor Lehman finished in 3 minutes, 29.20 seconds to push the Wildcats to 50 total team points. Northampton placed third in the 4 x 400 (3:31.34) to finish as the overall runner-up with 49 points.

“We always feel pretty good about a relay when we have Peter Diebold on the anchor leg,” said Weston coach John Monz. “He gives everybody, including his teammates, a lot of confidence.”

In addition to the 4 x 400, Diebold took first in the 600 with a meet record time of 1 minute, 19.82 seconds and was the anchor of the team’s second-place 4 x 200 relay (1:33.57).

“Peter’s a huge asset to our team,” said Weston coach Kathy Vinciullo. “He’s probably one of the hardest workers we’ve had so his leadership is how he approaches his events and keeps himself ready, mentally as well as physically. It’s great for our team atmosphere.”

Senior Tyler Morris along with Hubbard also had strong performances for Weston. Morris placed third in the mile (4:30.34) and Hubbard finished third in the 600 (1:23.99).

After tying Pentucket for first place last year, the North Reading girls’ track team won the Div. 4 title outright after outscoring Nauset, 37-35.P.J. Wright

On the girls’ side, North Reading scored 37 points to capture the team title over Nauset (35) after tying Pentucket for first at last season’s Division 4 meet.

The Hornets were led by sophomore Katelyn Gorgenyi, who finished first in the 55 hurdles (8.50 seconds), while junior Lindsay MacLellan and senior Megan Lawlor placed third in the mile (5:10.38) and long jump (16-11¼) respectively.

Senior Grace Hadley also scored five key points with her fourth-place finish in the 1,000 (3:04.86).

“This team was very sprint oriented at the beginning of the year and even throughout the year, but the distance came up strong today,” said North Reading coach Sotirios Pintzopoulos. “That’s what you need. Others have to step up or you can’t win.”

Nauset sophomore Monique Malcolm and seniors Michael Blake of Hudson and Rishabh Prakash of Burlington were double winners in the individual events on Sunday.

Malcolm won the girls’ 55 (7.33 seconds) and 300 (40.27), Blake won the boys’ 55 (6.44) and 300 (34.95), and Prakash took first in both the boys’ mile (4:24.39) and 2 mile (9:24.39).
