TechBoston runs off with another championship

With their victory assured, the TechBoston first stringers were on the bench for the final minute of the game and erupted when one of their teammates in the game hit a shot. Call it TechBoston, Boston Tech, or Dorchester High, just make sure you give the boys’ basketball team from the pilot school at 9 Peacevale Road in Dorchester its proper due as kings of the city.

For the second straight year, TechBoston ran through the field at the Boston City League Championships, sealing another title with an 86-59 victory over New Mission Thursday at Madison Park.

The formula remains the same for the defending Division 2 state champion Bears. TechBoston created turnovers with alacrity and leaned on guards Lyron Bennett (28 points, 5 assists) and Shamar Browder (29 points, 6 steals) offensively.

“My goal is to make it look like we have seven or eight guys on the court at all times,” said TechBoston coach Johnny Williams. “We want guys’ heads on a swivel, not knowing where we’re coming from and what angle we’re taking.”

TechBoston (18-2) opened the game 4 for 6 from 3-point range to create a 33-20 lead early in the second quarter. Over the next 16 minutes, Browder and Bennett accounted for all 35 points for the Bears, as they maintained a sizable 68-50 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

“They know how to feed off one another,” Williams said of his guards. “They’re both great individual players with an incredible ability to get to the basket, but they’re unselfish. They will pass first, and that’s what I love.”

Browder scored 21 points in the first half, taking over the game with Bennett and Rich Burton (7 points, 2 blocks) on the bench in foul trouble. Both Browder and Bennett surpassed the 1,000-point mark for their careers during the second quarter, pacing the Bears to a 50-30 halftime lead.

Sequan Dare posted 10 points and 18 rebounds for New Mission (18-5), but committing 22 turnovers against the hungry Bears doomed the Titans.

After winning their fifth game in six days, the Bears earned some rest before entering the state tournament as a top seed in the Division 2 South bracket.

“Our first goal, coming in, was to win the city,” said Browder, who was named tournament MVP. “Now we want to win the state. We have to win both back-to-back.”

Last February, Williams led the Bears to their first BCL title since the school became TechBoston in 2002. By clinching another title, he’s created a budding dynasty, and another deep run in the state tournament would only further solidify the Bears’ reputation.

“I don’t know how much longer we have the keys to the city,” said Williams. “But while we have them now, we’re going to continue to drive the car.”
