FRANKLIN — As the seedings for the 2019 MIAA boys’ lacrosse tournament were announced Friday at association headquarters, several programs celebrated milestones.

In the Division 3 North bracket, third-seeded Bishop Fenwick (15-3), fourth-seeded Dracut (13-5), fifth-seeded Winthrop (17-1), and eighth-seeded St. Mary’s (14-4) were respectively able to secure the first state tournament home game in program history.

“If you look up and down the bracket, there’s not one team that doesn’t deserve to be there,” said Winthrop coach Brian Donnelly.

“Division 3 in general has really stepped up. We’re excited to get started with what we call the second season. I’m confident in my team, but we have some great competition coming up.”

The seedings were calculated based on overall record, a coaches’ poll, and a strength of schedule formula created by the MIAA. Starting in the spring of 2020, lacrosse seedings will be determined based on the formula created by MaxPreps.

This year, there was a change for lacrosse in terms of tiebreakers. In previous seasons, the coaches’ poll served as a tiebreaker, but this year the MIAA used the same formula that broke ties in other sports:

■  Head-to-head competition

■  Most wins

■  League championship

■  Record against common opponents

■  Coin flip

That formula caused St. Mary’s to move from its original placement as the No. 6 seed in D3 North, to the No. 8 seed; Shawsheen (15-3) had more overall wins.

“Ultimately our goal was to host our first state tournament game and we’re delighted to be able to do that,” said fourth-year St. Mary’s coach Josh Field.

“Our goal, when we put our schedule together, is to play competitive teams so we’re a better lacrosse team. If [the MIAA] is going to move more towards strength of schedule in determining the seedings, then that’s in line with our goals anyway.”

The D3 North bracket shifted because Pentucket (15-3) initially reported a win as a loss. According to Wayne Puglisi, president of the Eastern Massachusetts Lacrosse Coaches Association, a coach from the closed-door coaches’ poll meeting was able to identify the error and correct the record before the pairings became official.

“I can’t tell you how scrupulous we are. We’re so focused on making sure we’re doing the right thing,” said Puglisi. “I think I can speak for everybody in that room, we love how we seed the tournament. It’s the right way to do things.”

Based on the three-tiered formula, St. John’s Prep (16-3) secured the top seed in the D1 North bracket. Acton-Boxborough (15-1) grabbed the second seed and Lincoln-Sudbury (13-4) the third.

In the loaded D1 South bracket, Hingham (18-2) secured the top seed for the second straight year. Franklin (16-2) earned the second seed, its highest tournament placement in program history.

Winchester (17-1) secured the top seed in D2 North and Hanover (13-5) grabbed the top spot in D2 South.

Medfield (16-2) earned the top seed in D2 Central/East, Dover-Sherborn (12-5) took the top seed in D3 Central/East, and Norwell (17-1) took the top spot in D3 South, earning a bye along with the other top three seeds in the 12-team bracket.
