Denied in 2018 final, Case softball captures Division 3 South championship
TAUNTON — One year after coming up short in the Division 3 South final, the 10th-seeded Case softball team righted its wrong with a 7-1 win over top-seeded Monomoy Regional Saturday at Taunton High School to capture the sectional crown in coach Shannon Silva’s first year on the job.
Case (18-6) will play North champion Austin Prep in a state semifinal this week (TBA).
“We’ve really tried to take it one game at a time, but after we won our previous game, that’s what we’ve talked about: none of these girls have been past the South sectional,” Silva said. “We knew we were going to have to hit the ball, so we did a good job.”
It may have taken awhile for Case’s bats to come alive off Mollie Charest, who had 13 strikeouts, but once they did, there was no looking back. The Cardinals broke open a 1-1 affair in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of errors by Monomoy (21-3), with Casey Medeiros scoring the winning run on a passed ball and Riley Fitzgerald coming home on a sacrifice fly by Teaghan Souza.
The big blow came in the following frame, when Madyson Medeiros, Casey’s sister, struck a two-run homer to left field to provide ample breathing room.
Alexis Jeffrey, who tripled to lead off the inning, came around to score on the Medeiros homer to make it 5-1, Case. Hannah Pelletier and Jenna Thibault added RBI singles to extend the lead for the Cardinals, who batted around in the seventh.
