Bill Belichick adds a new title: grandfather

Bill Belichick opened his Tuesday morning conference call by announcing a different sort of roster addition.

“It’s a little different than the usual one, emphasis would be on little,” said the Patriots coach.

“We can add newborn Blakely Rose to the depth chart. She was born this morning to my son Steve and the real MVP, Jen.”

Belichick said that Blakely Rose checked in at 20 inches and 7 pounds (no word yet on her 40 time).

Belichick played the grandfather role to a T, including expressing his frustration over technology. Belichick said he will no longer be using Microsoft Surface tablets to review plays on the sideline.

“I’m done with the tablets,” he said. “They’re just too undependable. Too much inconsistency. I just can’t take it anymore.”

Belichick said the technology was failing on a weekly basis, but he wasn’t sure how urgently the NFL felt the need to address the problem. The Patriots will go back to using binders of hard copy photos.

Belichick’s distaste for the tablets has been well-documented, most recently during the Patriots’ loss to the Bills, when TV cameras filmed him smashing one that apparently was malfunctioning.

Belichick also provided updates on running back Dion Lewis and guard Tre Jackson, both of whom are on the PUP list. They are eligible to return to practice this week, but Belichick said that wasn’t likely.

“Probably not this week,” he said.

Once a player who was placed on the regular-season PUP list begins practicing, the team has three weeks to activate him to the 53-man roster or he must remain on PUP for the remainder of the season.
