Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins announced Wednesday that he will be joining the Patriots as a free agent.

In six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, Hawkins had 209 receptions for 2,419 yards and 9 touchdowns. His most productive season was 2014, his first year in Cleveland, when he had 63 receptions for 824 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Hawkins, 31, is 5 feet 7 inches and 175 pounds. He made the announcement of his signing on Uninterrupted. The Patriots officially announced the move Thursday.

“After giving it a lot of thought, I’ve decided I’m going to join the New England Patriots,” he said. “I’m super excited about the opportunity to join the reigning football champions.

“When I exited Cleveland, I said it was about joining a contender, and the Patriots are THE contender. The program is top notch. You get the opportunity to play with the best quarterback and the best coach in NFL history.”

Later Wednesday, Hawkins posted a video mashup on Twitter in which his face was superimposed into a scene from the HBO series “Ballers” featuring Patriots receivers Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman practicing football at a beach.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots released wide receiver Devin Street. The Patriots had claimed Street off waivers from Indianapolis in May.
