It was a busy day for the Bennett brothers Wednesday, but you can forget all about a family reunion in Foxborough.
The Patriots released tight end Martellus Bennett, saving the team more than $6 million in cap space. The news broke hours after the Seahawks traded Michael Bennett to the Eagles.
After helping the Patriots to a Super Bowl title in 2016, Bennett signed a three-year deal with the Packers last offseason. His stay in Green Bay lasted just seven games before he was released.
Bennett was claimed off waivers by the Patriots but his second stint in New England was short-lived. He played just two games before being placed on injured reserve with shoulder and hamstring woes.
A 10-year veteran with 433 career catches for 4,573 yards and 30 touchdowns, Bennett, who will turn 31 Saturday, hinted on social media early last season that it would be his last.
It remains to be seen if he has had a change of heart now that he’s healthy.
The Patriots now have roughly $23 million in cap space, though that number likely will change daily over the next few weeks with the expected cuts, restructures, and signings.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick was spotted at Alabama’s pro day Thursday. As always, the Crimson Tide are loaded with potential pros, including two of the best safeties in the draft in Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison as well as the consensus No. 1 receiver in Calvin Ridley. Not all of the 13 players at the pro day worked out, as some rested on their NFL Combine performances, but all were expected to participate in meetings with coaches and scouts . . . The Patriots released receiver/returner Bernard Reedy, who spent time on the practice squad and 53-man roster, and defensive end Caleb Kidder, who spent last season on injured reserve after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Montana.
Patterson averaged 28.3 yards per return last season.Continue reading »
