Wednesday’s Patriots practice report: Brady’s workload creeps up

Tom Brady was directing some traffic at practice Wednesday.barry chin/globe staff

ATTENDANCE, PLEASE

■  RT Marcus Cannon, RB Sony Michel, and LB Harvey Langi were not spotted.

■  G Brian Schwenke, who left Tuesday’s practice early, did his work on the conditioning field.

■  Trey Flowers was again limited and split his time between both fields. Derek Rivers filled in for Flowers with the starters.

NEW INJURIES: None.

DRESS CODE: Full pads.

THREE UP

■  Tom Brady: The league’s reigning MVP connected on 9 of 11 passes as he ramped up his workload compared with the previous three practices.

■  Deatrich Wise: The second-year defensive end batted down one of Brady’s passes at the line as he continues to string together solid day after solid day.

■  Damarius Travis: The second-year safety seems to make a standout play each day, and this time it was an end zone interception of rookie quarterback Danny Etling.

THREE DOWN

■  Jeremy Hill: The veteran running back fumbled for the second straight day.

■  Eric Decker: The receiver, who is still getting his feet under him, dropped an easy toss from Brady.

■  Mike Gillislee: The big back also dropped an easy screen pass.

UNOFFICIALLY SPEAKING

Brady’s only real hiccup was the aforementioned Wise bat-down. Brian Hoyer was solid again, completing 11 of 16 in full-team work. Etling, who is expected to get the bulk of the snaps Thursday night against Washington, was 7 of 11 in 11-on-11 work.

RECEIVERS RACE

Phillip Dorsett continues to turn heads. The speedster froze Eric Rowe momentarily, bolted down the left sideline, and caught a Brady pass in stride in the end zone.

TOP PLAYS

To be fair, this was not a high-speed, high-tempo, tightly defended practice, so highlight plays were at a minimum.

■  Rob Gronkowski kept his concentration and hauled in a Brady pass across the middle despite the ball being tipped by Kyle Van Noy.

■  Etling hit Decker in the corner of the end zone with a tight zip.

■  Hoyer connected with Devin Lucien in the end zone despite having Stephon Gilmore on the receiver’s hip.

■  Etling had a nice back-to-back sequence when he hit Braxton Berrios on a deep pass down the right sideline and followed that by threading the needle to Cordarrelle Patterson in the end zone.

■  Keion Crossen forced a fumble after Etling had hit TE Will Tye on a rollout.

■  Berrios had a nice sliding catch from Hoyer and slid about 10 yards in the saturated turf.

ODDS AND ENDS

■  The final 20 minutes of practice were conducted in a deluge — surely delighting the coaching staff, but leading to several dropped passes.

■  Cyrus Jones continued to work on fielding punts, with Jonathan Jones and

Nate Ebner bearing down on him as gunners. All three players participated in individual drills but not in team work, though Ebner saw some time as the punt protector, a role he has filled in previous seasons.

■  Jordan Richards and Travis also took snaps as the punt protector.

■  Though he didn’t appear to be injured, Rex Burkhead left the main field early and did sprints with the rehabbing players.

■  Redskins (and Notre Dame) legend Joe Theismann was a practice guest.
