Football enthusiasts across the nation were condemning a Patriots fan for throwing beer in the face of Tyreek Hill after the Chiefs receiver made a game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game.

The move — which was coupled by other fans giving Hill the middle finger — led to a public outcry, and the 21-year-old Mansfield man who allegedly splashed the beer in Hill’s face is now facing charges.

However, some New England fans noted online that a similar situation played out more than a decade ago, but with the shoe on the other foot, when fans in Minnesota appear to have tried to pelt a Patriots tight end with a beer.

Video from the 2006 Monday Night Football game between the Patriots and the Vikings shows then-Patriots player Ben Watson scoring a touchdown in the second quarter, bringing the score to 16-0. As three teammates — including Tom Brady — gathered around Watson to celebrate, a flying, fizzy object was thrown onto the field close by the Patriots group.

The move apparently angered Brady, who was then seen throwing his arm in the air, approaching the stands, and yelling in agitation, “Bring it on!,” according to a 2006 Boston Globe story.

New England ended up winning that game, 31-7.
