‘I don’t know what to say’: Listen to calls of the Dolphins’ game-winning play vs. Patriots
So what are we calling this thing, anyway? Miami Miracle? Sorry, that sounds too close to Miracle in Miami, and we’re pretty sure Doug Flutie and Gerard Phelan would have a good case for copyright infringement.
In case you somehow missed it, the Dolphins snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a 69-yard touchdown by Kenyan Drake that involved a pass and two laterals on the final play to hand the Patriots a 34-33 loss.
It was a finish that left those who witnessed it stunned. And in a few cases, the camera was rolling.
As they were getting ready for their “5th Quarter” postgame broadcast, Dan Roche and Christian Fauria were watching the final play on a live feed at CBS Sporting Club. Fauria watched intently, while Roche is seen glancing back and forth from his notes to the screen when he realizes what’s going on.
The live feed is a few seconds ahead of the video that the fans in the bar are watching. After the play is over, Fauria stands up and yells to the patrons “You’re not going to like this,” and whips out his phone to record their reaction.
A similar scene played out on NBC Sports Boston’s “Post Game Live” with Tom Curran, Rob Ninkovich, Troy Brown, and Michael Holley.
If you didn’t hear the audio because you and everyone around you was screaming at the television, here’s the call by CBS’s Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts:
Bob Socci and Scott Zolak had the call on 98.5 The Sports Hub, and were left speechless after the Dolphis scored, with 35 seconds elapsing before Zolak finally breaks the silence.
“I don’t know what to say,” said Zolak.
The Miami Dolphins broadcast begins with the prophetic pre-snap observation that Rob Gronkowski is on the field.
“New England’s got Gronkowski down here,” points out Bob Griese. “He couldn’t tackle anybody.”
“I don’t believe it,” Griese exclaims after the touchdown. “That play never works.”
