Tom Brady calls upon 3 Boston athletes in playoff hype video
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is ready for some postseason football.
In a dramatic playoff hype video shared on social media Saturday, Brady — together with Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts, Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy, and Celtics forward Jayson Tatum — read lines from “A New Refutation of Time,” an essay by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.
“Our destiny is not frightful from being unreal,” Brady begins.
“It is frightful because it is irreversible and iron-clad,” Betts follows.
The words appear to reflect Brady’s mission to continue to defy Father Time. At 41 years old, he is the oldest active quarterback in the league. His years of experience (19) exceeds that of Betts, McAvoy, and Tatum combined (9).
As the group takes turns reciting the excerpt from Borges, the video splices shots of their narration with scenes from the Patriots’ 11-5 regular season.
“Time is the substance we are made of,” reads McAvoy, before the video cuts to Dont’a Hightower’s interception against the Kansas City Chiefs in October.
“Time is a river which sweeps me along,” says Tatum, before the video shows one of James White’s team-high 12 touchdowns this season.
The minute-long clip closes with the following lines:
Brady: But I am the river.
Tatum: It is the tiger which destroys me.
McAvoy: But I am the tiger.
Betts: It is a fire, which consumes me.
Brady: But I am the fire.
