ATLANTA – Patriots safety Patrick Chung left Super Bowl LIII early in the third quarter with an arm injury, leaving the Patriots without a veteran defender important to their game plan.

Chung hurt his right arm falling while making a tackle on Rams running back Todd Gurley, and the Patriots announced he would not return.

He remained on the ground in obvious pain while trainers attended to him. A cart came out to take him off the field and to the locker room, but Chung refused to take it and walked off on his own with his arm in an air cast.

Chung, a versatile player who has played safety, linebacker, and cornerback, was immediately replaced by linebacker Elandon Roberts on the field, but cornerback J.C. Jackson subbed in soon after.
