David Ortiz belts home run No. 537, moves past Mantle on all-time list

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz belted home run No. 537 Thursday night, moving past New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle and into sole possession of 17th on baseball’s all-time list.

His shot came in the bottom of the eighth inning and closed the Yankees’ lead to 5-2.

Ortiz, who plans to retire after this season, is now 11 home runs behind Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt, who is No. 16 on the all-time list with 548.
