WEDNESDAY’S SPRING TRAINING REPORT
SCORES: Twins 8, Red Sox 1; Phillies 2, Red Sox 1.
BREAKDOWN: At Fort Myers, the Sox gave up four runs in the first inning and were routed by the Twins. Eduardo Escobar and Ryan LaMarre had home runs for Minnesota. The Sox were held to four hits, all singles.
At Clearwater, the Phillies scored the winning run in the seventh when pitcher Kyle Martin dropped a popup with the bases loaded. The Sox loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning. But Luke Tendler hit a ball back to the mound and the Phillies forced Deven Marrero at the plate to end the game.
THUMBS UP: Heath Hembree retired six of the eight Twins he faced, striking out three . . . Justin Haley, who started against the Phillies, threw three scoreless innings against a solid lineup.
THUMBS DOWN: Chandler Shepherd could not get through the first inning against the Twins. He surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk. Shepherd struck out Brian Dozier, then the next five hitters reached . . . The Sox fell asleep in the sixth inning against the Twins, leaving third base uncovered on a shift and Gregorio Petit took the base . . . The Sox made five errors on the day.
MEDICAL REPORT: Brock Holt, a lineup scratch on Tuesday with an abdominal strain, took some swings in the cage and should be ready to play on Friday against the Twins.
AROUND THE BASES: Kevin Boles managed the team in Clearwater with two members of his staff at Triple A Pawtucket, Rich Gedman and Bruce Crabbe . . . The game in Clearwater lasted a tidy 2:34. The game in Fort Myers was 3:20 . . . J.D. Martinez was 0 for 2 in his Grapefruit League debut against the Twins. The plan was for three at-bats but that would have required him playing six or seven innings in the field.
NEXT GAME: The Sox host Tampa Bay at 1:05 p.m. on Thursday. Brian Johnson will face Chris Archer. The game is on NESN, Fox, and WEEI-AM.
