Old friends: J.D. Martinez has faced Houston, his former team, 31 times in his career counting this series. He is 30 of 121 (.248) with six homers and 20 RBIs with 30 strikeouts.

History on their side: This season is the third time the Sox have come back to tie an ALCS by winning Game 2. In the two previous times (1986 and 2013) they advanced to the Series.

Closer troubles: Craig Kimbrel is 3 for 3 in postseason save chances. But he has allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over 3.1 innings.

What to watch for: Alex Bregman is 0 for 3 in the series with six walks. The Sox have decided he won’t beat them. The Astros need to get hitters on in front of him. … If Eovaldi can throw his cutter for strikes early on, it’ll be a long day for the Astros. … Keuchel had a 1.31 WHIP this season, his highest since 2013. The Sox will have their chances. Can they capitalize on them? … The crowd at Minute Maid Park is a loud one and very engaged in the game. The Sox have to blunt that emotion early. An early run or two will quiet the place down.

Other notes: Eovaldi, a Houston native who now lives in nearby Friendswood, has a 3.19 ERA in five career starts and 31 innings against Houston. He last faced them on June 20 while playing for the Tampa Bay Rays. Eovaldi allowed four runs over six innings all on solo home runs. George Springer, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve hit back-to-back-to-back homers leading off the sixth inning. Altuve also had one in the fourth inning. Eovaldi has allowed two earned runs over his last 20 innings. That includes giving up one run over seven innings in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Yankees. … Keuchel is 4-2 with a 3.28 ERA in nine career postseason appearances. He faced the Sox in Game 2 in the Division Series last season and allowed one run over 5.2 innings. Keuchel has faced the Sox four times in the regular season and allowed 20 runs on 28 hits over 19.2 innings. … The Sox have only four home runs in six postseason games. … Martinez has 12 RBIs in 13 career postseason games. … The Sox are 2-0 on the road in this postseason and have scored 20 runs.
