Saturday’s spring training report: Red Sox open with a win
SCORE: Red Sox 8, Yankees 5
BREAKDOWN: Trailing, 3-0, after nonroster righthander Josh Smith was knocked around by the Yankees, the Sox scored one run in the second and five in the third. Michael Chavis’s three-run homer off Drew Hutchison in the third was the key hit. The teams combined for 26 hits and 18 runners left on base.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Right fielder Bryce Brentz was 2 for 3 with an RBI and made two nice defensive plays. He dug a ball out of the corner in the third inning to hold Greg Bird to a single, then ended the fifth with a running catch of a ball hit by Clint Frazier to leave two runners stranded.
NEXT GAME: The Sox host the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be on NESN and WEEI-AM (850). The Sox have righthander Ryan Weber scheduled to start and the Twins will go with lefthander Martin Perez.
