Justin Evans, the son of longtime Red Sox outfielder Dwight Evans, died Sunday morning. He was 41.

Both Justin Evans and his brother, Timothy, were born with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that produces benign but painful soft tumors on the nerves.

During Justin Evans’s life, his tumors required numerous procedures, including radiation to eradicate a growth on the brain as a 5-year-old and surgery to remove a tumor on the spine.

Dwight Evans played for the Red Sox from 1972-90 and is currently a player development consultant for the team.
