Moments before first pitch of the Red Sox series opener vs. the visiting Texas Rangers Monday night, the Red Sox held a moment of thought, prayer and reflection for David Ortiz, who was shot Sunday in the Dominican Republic.
As Red Sox players and coaching staff emerged from the dugout to line up along the first base line for the pregame ceremony, silence filled Fenway Park when the message “We send our love to David Ortiz” was flashed across the screen in left center field, next to a bright red 34.
When the 34 popped up again on the main screen above center field, the Fenway crowd met it with applause and cheers, showing support for the legendary Red Sox slugger.
Many fans brought signs for Ortiz to the game. One flashed on the big screen read “You got this Big Papi. Red Sox Nation is Ortiz Strong.”
Another said, “Thoughts and Prayers for our Big Papi. We love you.”
