Revolution acquire English defender Michael Mancienne

The Revolution have acquired defender Michael Mancienne on a free transfer from English club Nottingham Forest.

Mancienne was a mainstay in the Forest back line over the past four seasons, amassing more than 2,200 minutes each year and totaling 135 first-team appearances in all competitions.

“We believe his experience will help him make immediate contributions to the club and allow him to become a leader on and off the field,” said Revolution general manager Mike Burns.

Mancienne’s arrival comes at a time when New England has been victimized by mistakes and complacency on defense. The Revolution have conceded seven goals over the past three games, with man-on-man marking inside the 18-yard box becoming a big issue.

Before his time at Forest, Mancienne had top-flight experience with Hamburger SV in Germany along with Chelsea FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers in England.

The 30-year-old defender will occupy an international roster spot and will be added to the roster using targeted allocation money upon receipt of his P-1 visa.
