Carles Gil sets up a goal in Revolution’s second preseason game

The Revolution’s newest signing, designated player Carles Gil, made his preseason debut with the club in Marbella, Spain, Friday in a 2-2 draw with Czech champion Viktoria Plzen.

Signed for just under $2 million from Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna, Gil started the friendly match at attacking midfield and recorded an assist on New England’s first goal.

Gil, who had plenty of touches in the first half, slotted a through ball right into the path of Cristian Penilla, who calmly beat Viktoria keeper Ales Hruska low for the early lead. The midfielder played in just the opening 45 minutes.

The draw was the Revolution’s second in as many games to start preseason, after a 0-0 result Thursday with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in which Gil did not play.
