Globe Op-Talk: After endorsement, questions for Jake Auchincloss

The Globe endorsed Jake Auchincloss as a Fourth Congressional district candidate on July 31st — earlier than usual to accommodate mail-in and early voting in the coronavirus pandemic. Many Globe readers have expressed concerns about the candidate's past statements and campaign finances, some of which emerged after the editorial board's deliberations. Readers and voters deserve to know more and hear directly from the candidate. In this conversation, Globe editorial page editor Bina Venkataraman asked Auchincloss about his record on racial justice, free speech, and beyond. EDITOR'S NOTE: In this interview, Jake Auchincloss states incorrectly that he had co-docketed a resolution to rename Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day in the city of Newton. He was not one of the two councilors who filed a similar resolution in 2018. When asked by the Globe editorial board, his campaign clarified after the Op-Talk that he has recently voiced support for an initiative from Families Organizing for Racial Justice’s to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in Newton.
