Bicyclist, 80, dies in crash with parked truck during race

An 80-year-old man was killed after he crashed into a parked pickup truck while competing in North East Master Cycling Association race on Saturday in Rhode Island, Charlestown police said.

Officers were dispatched to the area of South County Trail around 12:10 p.m., according to a police statement. Upon arrival, emergency services personal discovered an unconscious bicyclist alongside a 1998 green Ford pickup truck in the southbound breakdown lane.

The man, whose helmet was found next to the pickup truck, was taken to South County Hospital was severe head injuries, the statement said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The incident is under investigation by the Charlestown police, who are not releasing the man's identity because next of kin has not been notified.
