Europe’s vow to do more stimulus, US jobless data help lift stock markets

Stocks rose, sending the Dow and S&P 500 to record highs, as Europe’s central bank vowed to increase its stimulus if needed. Last week, the Bank of Japan unexpectedly boosted its stimulus efforts, putting pressure on Europe to revive growth as pessimism about the eurozone economic outlook builds. In addition, a drop in jobless claims — down 10,000 to a three-week low of 278,000 — bolstered optimism about the US economy. Tesla rose 4.4% as it predicted several years of 50% sales growth. Of the S&P 500 members that have posted their latest quarterly results, 80% topped profit projections, while 60% beat sales estimates.
