Yuan and oil stabilize, giving US stocks a lift

A rocky week for the markets ended on a bright note as investors bought stocks across industries. Indexes wavered early before they climbed steadily amid a mix of earnings results. The market also got a lift as China’s currency steadied after a slump earlier in the week that shook financial markets around the world. Nine of the 10 sectors of the S&P 500 ended higher. Retailer stocks led the way on solid earnings reports. Nordstrom rose after beating analysts’ expectations. JC Penney also climbed on a narrower loss on stronger-than-expected sales. In the tech sector, Applied Materials fell after the chip-making equipment company said revenue for the quarter fell short. And the price of US oil rose slightly, but still ended the week lower as rising supplies continue to outpace global demand.
