PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine sheriff’s department is adding facial recognition software to its investigative toolbox. Beginning Monday, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department will begin using the software to determine if people are who say they are. Deputies will be able to take a digital photo of a person, which will be compared with a database of photos of those who have previously been booked to determine whether there is a match. The Portland Press Herald reported that the software can help deputies determine if someone is lying about their identity. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine says it objects to the use of the technology because it is new and unreliable.
