Driver, 46, arraigned in fatal Stoughton crash

A 46-year-old Sharon woman was arraigned on several charges Monday after she allegedly struck and killed a pregnant woman who was walking on the opposite side of the street with her son in Stoughton, authorities said.

Karen Blau, 46, faces charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of liquor and drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation, the Norfolk district attorney’s office said in a statement.

Blau was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail. A judge also ordered her not to contact the victim’s family, the statement said. She is due back in court on Aug. 14 for a pretrial conference, the statement said.

Stoughton police said that Joanne White, 35, of Stoughton, was hit by Blau’s car about 8:45 p.m. Sunday on Lincoln Street. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital by helicopter, where she and her fetus were pronounced dead, police said.

The accident occurred when Blau, who was visiting a residence on Lincoln Street, backed her car out of the driveway and went completely across the street, where she hit a tree and White, the district attorney’s office said.

White had been walking with her son, 11. He was able to avoid injury when his mother yelled at him to run, the district attorney’s office said.

State and Stoughton police and the district attorney’s office have conducted a preliminary investigation and reconstruction of the crash. Blau may face additional charges, Stoughton police said.
