Cardinal Sean O’Malley released a statement Wednesday night:

We join the Boston Fire Department, the Boston Police Department and Boston EMS in mourning the tragic loss of two Boston firefighters today, Lieutenant Edward J. Walsh and Firefighter Michael R. Kennedy. These brave men gave their lives in the line of duty, putting the public safety ahead of their own interests. As a community we come together in this time of loss, offering our support and our prayers to the Walsh and Kennedy families and to their fellow firefighters. We also pray for the firefighters and many people injured today, and express our gratitude for heroic efforts of all public safety personnel who responded to this tragedy. Tonight we pray for the repose of the souls of Lieutenant Walsh and Firefighter Kennedy , for the consolation of their families and loved ones, and for God’s gift of peace for all impacted by this devastating loss.
