Man accidentally drives car through wall of McDonalds

A 75-year-old man accidentally drove his car into a McDonald’s restaurant in Barnstable Wednesday afternoon, causing no injuries, but major damage to the building and another car, police said.

Walter Mayo III, of Orleans, was backing his car up in the McDonald’s parking lot in the Hyannis area when his foot got stuck on the gas pedal, which caused him to lose control as the vehicle zoomed backward, Sergeant Sean Sweeney said.

Mayo’s car hit a red Ford Focus and then slammed into the side of the McDonald’s, Sweeney said. When Mayo’s car hit the building, the wall collapsed about 5 feet inwards, breaking a water pipe and causing other damage.

Both Mayo’s car and the Ford Focus were towed from the scene. Neither driver was injured.

Half a dozen people were in the restaurant at the time, but no one was hurt, Sweeny said.

Mayo was issued a citation. No foul play is suspected.

Sweeney said an officer at the scene described Mayo as “lucid” and capable of driving.
