A water main break in Cambridge that lasted nearly 12 hours Saturday caused at least one restaurant to close as street flooding measured as deep as a foot in some areas, officials said.

The break, which occurred on two lines, occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. in the area of Harvard and Portland streets and water spread to Broadway and Main Street, according to police spokesman Jeremy Warnick. A cause for the break has not been determined, but cold weather Friday night appeared to be a factor.

By 5:30 p.m., the lines had been shut off, Warnick said. Crews were excavating the scene and were hopeful that the pipe would be fixed and water service restored by Sunday morning. Once the pipe is repaired, the road will need to be temporarily repaved, he said.

Though some streets filled with water, buildings and residences in the area did not flood, Warnick said.

However, Area Four, a restaurant on Main Street, had to close Saturday because of the break, said hostess Nina Williams.

“We have no running water right now,” she said. “We have no sprinklers, which is a huge safety precaution.”

Williams said the water was deep enough in the roadway that cars could not drive by.

“One of my co-workers was riding a bike and had to stop” because of the flooding, Williams said.

The Water Department was able to isolate the water to Portland Street in the afternoon.

The Garment District on Broadway was still open Saturday, but an employee said a police cruiser was blocking traffic from the road.

“There’s a lot of ice in the middle of the street,” said Sean Clark. “People can get to the store, but parking is definitely harder.”

No injuries have been reported, according to Warnick. Police will remain on scene until the road is safe for traffic after being repaved.
