The business group proposing to build a $500 million casino on the New Bedford waterfront and another group proposing a casino in Somerset are asking the Gaming Commission to once again extend its deadline for applications for the state's only remaining casino license.
KG Urban Enterprises, a New York-based development company, said in a two-page letter to the commission that it needs an additional 45 days to complete its initial application for a New Bedford casino.
The Somerset group contacted the gambling commission before the deadline at 5 p.m. on Monday also to ask for an extension, the commission said.
The gambling commission declined to comment further, pending a meeting on Thursday at which it will consider the extension requests.
KG Urban earlier this month announced it had reached an agreement for Foxwoods Resorts to operate the New Bedford facility, if one is approved and built there.
Andrew Paven, a spokesman for KG Urban, said the company and the city of New Bedford "jointly requested an extension of time," and that company officials will make the case for the extension to the commission on Thursday.
Paven said the extension is needed to allow the company and Mayor Jon Mitchell of New Bedford to continue negotiations over a host community agreement, as required under the 2011 state casino law. Such agreements are meant to compensate communities where casinos are located for any inconveniences caused by the operation of the gaming facility.
KG Urban and the Somerset group, a partnership of Somerset on the Move and Crossroads Massachusetts, are seeking the casino license reserved for Southeastern Massachusetts.
A third group, Mass Gaming & Entertainment, has already completed its application for the license with proposal for a $650 million casino in Brockton.
