Dog taken in car theft is reunited with owner

Boston police Department

A dog that had been inside a car stolen from West Roxbury last week was returned to its owner on the same day police arrested two people in connection with the theft, officials said.

The dog, a 10-year-old Shih Tzu and poodle mix named Pooh, was reunited with its owner Saturday after being turned in to Boston’s Animal Care and Control Animal Shelter in Roslindale by a good Samaritan, Boston police said in a statement.

The stolen car was found in Haverhill.

The dog disappeared Thursday afternoon, when a dog walker reported someone stole her car from a client’s driveway on Baker Street in West Roxbury while Pooh was inside, police said. Authorities then searched for the small white-and-tan dog and the 2011 Subaru Outback.

The owner of the car is a 57-year-old woman from Hyde Park, police said. Police did not release information on the dog’s owner.

Haverhill police found the car on Pecker Street in that city, and arrested a man and woman who were inside it at 6:51 a.m. on Saturday, Boston police said.

Matthew Bradley, 23, of Brockton, and Kristina Cosgrove, 19, of Dedham, were arraigned in Haverhill District Court Monday, said Carrie Kimball Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney’s office.

Both pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving a stolen motor vehicle and receiving stolen property. Bradley was also charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance, while Cosgrove was charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance.

They will next appear in court on May 5.
