Woman, 67, killed after being struck by car in Saugus

A 69-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a car on Route 1 in Saugus on Wednesday night, officials said.

Loretta Williamson was walking on or near the edge of the highway just before 11 p.m. when she was struck, State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said. She was taken to North Shore Medical Center Union Hospital in Lynn, where she was pronounced dead.

The victim was walking with a 64-year-old woman who was not struck. She was taken to the hospital and released, Procopio said in a statement.

Both women are believed to have been staying at the Red Roof Inn on the same stretch of highway as the crash, State Police said.

Shortly after the accident, a 20-year-old Saugus woman reported to police that she may have hit someone while driving north on Route 1. Based on a preliminary investigation, State Police believe the woman struck the victim with her 2005 Nissan Altima, Procopio said.

That woman did not stop at the scene, but called police when she got home, he said.

The woman has been cooperative and was interviewed, and has not been arrested, Procopio said. State Police have not released her name.

The Altima “has damage consistent with striking someone” and was seized for investigation, he added. State Police will work with the Essex district attorney’s office to determine if charges are warranted.

State troopers will seek to determine whether the driver could have avoided hitting the victim based on several factors, including where the victim was on the road, weather conditions and visibility at time of crash, speed, and lines of sight, Procopio said.

The crash reconstruction will take several weeks to complete, he said.
