A Billerica police officer used a stun gun Sunday night to subdue a man who allegedly smashed another officer in the head with a liquor bottle, officials said.
According to Billerica Police Chief Daniel Rosa, the incident began after a reported disturbance between two men on Argonne Road around 10:30 p.m.
As Sergeant John Harring stood on a landing just inside the front door of the house, 25-year-old Daniel Zammuto allegedly rushed down a set of stairs with the glass bottle, then hit Harring in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious.
Zammuto, who is 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, allegedly tried to hit Harring again. Before he could do so, Officer Patrick O’Brien, who had been speaking to another resident nearby, rushed to Harring’s aid and shot Zammuto with his department-issued Taser, an electric stun gun, authorities said.
According to a statement from Rosa, the weapon immobilized Zammuto, and police were able to handcuff him.
Harring was taken to the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, where he was treated for injuries not considered life threatening, Rosa said.
Zammuto was arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court on charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a police officer.
Judge Neil Hourihan set bail at $5,000 and scheduled the next court hearing in the case for Aug. 12.
