A 69-year-old woman who allegedly drove drunk on Interstate 495 in Norton and crashed into three motorcyclists, posted $1,000 bail on Monday, officials said.
Hilda Szala of Riverside, R.I., faces several charges, including operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor and leaving the scene of a crash. She pleaded not guilty Monday at arraignment in Attleboro District Court, said State Police spokesman David Procopio.
Szala has been ordered not to drive while the case is ongoing, said Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for Bristol District Attorney Thomas Quinn.
Szala was allegedly driving on the wrong side of Interstate 495 at about 2 a.m. Sunday when she struck the trio and tried to leave the scene, Procopio said. Two men were seriously injured, and a third suffered minor injuries. State Police said they received multiple calls about a Toyota van driving the wrong way on I-495 in Mansfield. A short time later, troopers came on the scene of a crash involving the van and three motorcycles near the Plain Street overpass, Procopio said.
Troopers found that Szala was not injured and tested her for alcohol. “Troopers put her through a series of field sobriety tests and determined that she was impaired,” Procopio said. She was arrested at the scene.
The troopers also determined she had attempted to leave before her van broke.
The motorcyclists were two Brockton men, 38 and 36 years old, and a 28-year-old man from Pawtucket, R.I.
The 38-year-old was most seriously hurt; he was found on the side of the road only semiresponsive. The 36-year-old man was seriously injured but sitting up, still conscious and alert. Both men were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
The 28-year-old had minor injuries , Procopio said.
